A DOM sleeve is a heavy-duty outer sleeve made from Drawn Over Mandrel (DOM) steel tubing, a type of steel tubing with a smooth, precise finish and uniform wall thickness. In the automotive and off-road industries, these DOM sleeves are typically paired with poly (polyurethane) bushings and an inner steel sleeve to create a robust joint assembly. This type of assembly is used for components like motor mounts, suspension components, and roll cages, where it allows for controlled movement and helps to isolate vibrations.
What is DOM tubing?
DOM tubing is manufactured by mechanically drawing a seamless steel tube over a solid mandrel.
This process results in a more precise, consistent wall thickness and a smoother surface compared to standard seamless tubing.
Its high strength-to-weight ratio makes it ideal for applications requiring durability, such as automotive parts, axles, and suspension components.
How is a DOM sleeve used?
As part of a bushing kit:
A DOM sleeve is frequently combined with a poly bushing and an inner steel sleeve.
For vibration isolation:
The combination creates a joint that can absorb and dampen vibrations, reducing noise and wear in the vehicle.
For controlled movement:
The poly bushing allows for some flex and movement, while the strong DOM sleeve provides structural support.
In various applications:
You’ll find these assemblies in motor mounts, transmission cross members, and as components for roll cages.
Key characteristics
Heavy-duty construction:
The thick wall of the DOM tubing prevents it from deforming under high stress.
Smooth, precise surfaces:
The manufacturing process ensures a clean and uniform surface for the inner and outer sleeves.
Vibration damping:
When used with a bushing, it effectively isolates and reduces the transmission of vibrations.
